McKay Family Tartan May the road rise up to meet you May the wind be always at your back May
the sun shine warm upon your face, The rains fall soft upon your
fields And until we meet again May the God that loves us all Hold you
in the palm of His hand.
MacKay, MacKee, MacCoy, MacHugh, McKay, or Mac Aodha (son of Hugh) are all variations of this name. The McKays may have crossed
form Ulster to Scotland originally, or they may have come from Islay and the
islands of Southern Scotland as "gallowglasses" or mercenaries.
(The below history was in the memoirs of Irene (Evans) McKay) at the time of her death. It was written by Beatrice McKay many years ago and has been submitted exactly as hand written).
John and James McKay, John Stewart and other Stewarts came out from Ireland around the year 1876 or shortly after. They crossed the ocean in a sail boat and it took nine weeks. Both families settled in the township of Wilberforce near Pembroke, Ontario. At that time the CPR was being built across Canada ( going west from Pembroke). and the men of both families cut fire wood for the engines, keeping twelve miles ahead of the railroad. When they arrived as far as Chalk River both families settled in Chalk River, Stewarts became farmers and Curry Lake lumberman. McKay's farmed a short while and then became railroad men. (Jim and John McKay "carmen"). submitted by Jo-Ann Sutherland
Family History Check the Stewart site at www.bright-ideas-software.com.stewart (you can enter this from Contacts) this is a connection on the Stewart side. Betty found this site
by trial and error last year 2006 playing on the computer and typing in Dad's name. They are relatives on the paternal
side of the McKay family from down around Chalk River . Bryan and Jo-Ann (me) went to their family reunion last June and met a lot of relatives and had a great time. We met a first cousin who was the daughter of Annie McKay and Guy Field and a lot of other fine relatives. You can also check into www.genesreunited .com if you are a paid member you will be able to view the Family tree. Here is some history on the McKay side that is missing from the Stewart site:
